Production Plan

Costumes

The costumes for this music video for the band will be the kids school uniform to reflect the youngness of the band and the rock stereotype. It is also a reference to the band ACDC, as Angus Young who is known for wearing his school boy outfits during his performances. But using the uniform is also another way to keep the production cost to a minimum.

(Angus Young, ACDC)
Shooting

Filming for this music video will have to take place after school, as the members of the band have to go to their lessons and I can not pull them out of the school. The only time to film the performance shots is after school on a Friday, as this is when the band perform, and the music room is available to use.

Film Equipment

I have already obtained camera to take RECCE shots, two camcorders to gain a range of different shots, however I will need to book out a tripod to ensure the steadiness and quality of shots. So this needs to be taken into consideration when producing a production schedule and filming as I need to bring the tripod into school, along with my other filming equipment.

Props

For the performance scene I will not have to bring any props as the drums, guitars, bass, microphones will all be at school in the music room. This will make it easier for me, as I do not have to organize hiring any music equipment for the band and adding to the expenses.

Weather

Weather does not affect my production plan/schedule as a large majority of the scenes are shot inside, the school building. I can always change those few scenes to be shot inside, if necessary due to extreme weather.

Artist

The artist will be a band called the Bitter Avengers, which represents the B/A logo for Bexleyheath Academy so this fits in well with their uniform. There are 5 members of the band. The lead singer (male), lead guitarist (male), bassist (female), rhythm guitar (female), drummer (female). Having a mixture of male and female band members will not only attract the female gaze, but also the male gaze as well, as it is rare to have a female drummer.

Research into Rock Genre

Rock music is a popular genre of music that was developed during and after the 1960s. It had roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, and was heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music. Below I have collect a series of music videos I believe will influence me, during the creation of my music video, but also has influenced my artist. So with this extra research into the codes and conventions, will also enable me to gain a better understanding of the genre. However another benefit of this is also I can uses this research as basis so I can uses some intertexuality to reference the influential videos.

The above video was directed by David Grohl, the lead singer and guitarist of Foo Fighters. This video shows all the codes and conventions of a rock genre video. Including a performance at the end. However it is not taken so seriously, focusing on the 'stuff you' attitude that rockstars have towards society. A similar concept I am going to be trying to achieve in this music video. It also illustrate the image of learning to walk in society which is being used to driving. The narrative of the music video, doesn't illustrate the lyrics but it emphasis it creating a new meaning in the visuals. Voyeurism is not really used in this music video, but in the context of the notation of looking, it is like we are following him as he is walking.

This band is huge influence on my artist, and I have considered using some of the editing as intertextual reference in my music video. This was one of the music videos that kick started the music video industry, through its used of editing, and visuals techniques which emphasis they lyrics. It also contains a live performance which was traditional at the era.

The notion of looking as if we are following his journey to get to the performance, connotations to living life on the edge and never backing down from a challenge, which the visuals are trying to emphasis. Again there is a major influence of Live performance. There is also a focus on close ups of the lead.

This video goes against the visuals and lyrics. Intertexuality of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde. There is also intertexuality of the steam punk genre. There is a live performance, with close ups of the lead. A huge emphasis on the notation of looking, as if we the audience are given a privilege knowing how things took place with this murder and are smart as we know what is unfolding,

Production Journal 2

Last week we began storyboarding our ideas/concepts for our music video.Strain is starting to build up since I'm working on my own and I have to create at least +100 frames for the music video, with notes, create my digipak, finish my logo for the artist. Then cast and film the music video and then edit the whole sequence.

Unfortunately I haven't found anyone I know to be able to film, due to university commitments. So I'm going to have to go to the drama departments to find someone, then speak to the other media teachers who teach year 11, to ask them if they wanted to be in my production.

Audience Profile

Fonts

I have collected a series of fonts which will influence the final design of my logo for the artists image.

Boys to Men digipak

Nickleback Poster

Below is a Poster which I have chosen to analysis to gain the codes and conventions need to create one of my own to include in my digipak. The backdrop is similar to that of the album cover, to link it back to the record.
Bands name and album take up just a small section of the poster in comparison to the band photo. Therefore this band is trying to promote their image more as they are a well recognised band. Also the top part of the poster is normally the first thing the eye looks at, so the audience know straight away who is being promoted.
Also the poster is trying to connote the image that the band is living life in the 'fast lane' which is being promoted by the car apprently speeding along the road with the band behind it. Also the copyright information is place in tiny font at the bottom of the poster, living more room to promote the band.

Production Journal- Idea feedback

During last weeks lesson we present our initial ideas to the class. So we then could develop our ideas further. The main issue that is present is casting, as I need a last cast of rebelling students, teachers and of course the artist it's self. Also by filming inside the school I can connote the feeling of anarchy. Also I do not have to be dependent on the weather, especially in the winter months.

I also have some loose ends to tie up, as I am still not completely satisfied with the artist name, so I will have to come up with that rather quickly.

Also currently I'm creating a list of music videos that are influencing my work and how they present the codes and conventions of the genre. But also preset the image of the artist. I can also look for ideas to add, to show intertextuality. This is a huge post as it contains music videos and multiple analysis.

I have also nearly finished my digital mood board which I shall then post finally on here once finished.

I am also in the process of creating a 6 panel digipak to promote my artist, but this will be in initial design once I have completed the analysis of 2 digipaks on the market and a poster.

Digipaks

A digipak is a cd cover which is printed on glossy, cardboards, which is then folded like a booklet, which includes extra promotional items in comparison to a jewel CD album., such as a DVD, booklets etc.

The codes and conventions of a digipak is trying to promote the image of the artist by including extra promotional items, however a digipak must also include song names, record label logos, website, copyright information, barcode, DVD logo (if a DVD is included in the digipack), and the artists name on the spine.

By releasing a digipak the record company save revenue as it is easier to mass produce, especially if the album is being re-released or is a new upcoming artist. It is also beneficial to the recording company as it will promote their artist or act better than a normal jewel CD album with the extra content.

There are added benfits for the consumer when purchasing a digipak, such as it feels more personal as a booklet, better for the environment, more easily storable and they gain extra bonus features.

Mooboard- Jailbreak

Above I have created a digital version of the mood board I created in my lesson. It shows the image or British anarchy, which will be nostalgic to some viewers when I portray that image in the music video. I also have to portray the artist Irish heritage which I might do in the background with posters round the school environment or in the lighting at the beginning of the performance with orange white and green lights. I have also highlighted some influences of the artist and myself which is why I have place their logos on here. I have also listed things I want to included in the video, such as CCTV footage, integration scene and mugshots with placards.

The X Factor

In class we were discussing how the culture industry exhibited an 'assembly line character', through the use of the programme 'The X Factor'.

In which the programme is owned by a capitalist corporation, that uses it power over the media,to control the cultural products (the means of production) which 'shapes the activities of creative artists and consumers'. Therefore controlling the culture industry and the products we are buying for the sole purpose of the capitalist, exploiting the proletariats.

Through Standardisation, which argued by sociologists Adorno and Horkhiemer, who noted that songs which become successful over time were often referred to as 'standards'. A category which drew the attention to the character of the artist. But repeating the song multiple time on the radio or in shops, which was done for marketing reasons so that song would imprint itself onto the mind of the listener.  Which provokes a purchase of the product.

Pseudo Individuality this means the way the industry assemble their creative products then claim that they have originality, but when examined in more detail they artists only show subtle differences, or change a way a current genre is already portrayed.
